Writing Prompt: Signs and portents
I’ve always been slightly fascinated by divination — attempting to tell the future by reading signs. I like the idea that the Universe drops us little clues about what’s coming, hints we can use to guide our behavior. People have attempted to foretell future events for centuries using bones, runes, tea leaves, tarot cards, entrails… I suspect that just about anything you can imagine has been used by someone at some point.
This week, write a story, scene or poem where a character is trying to glean advice from signs, whether it’s using a traditional practice (like tea leaves) or something more modern and random (like songs on the radio or names heard in passing).
Also, be sure to check out the Kickstarter for the upcoming anthology What Fates Impose, full of stories about divination and its challenges and pitfalls.
